Summary

This page contains information about the Oadby and Wigston Multicultural Group.   Councillors and officers of the council meet every two months with representatives from the  various faith and cultural groups in the borough.  A multicultural greeting sign situated on The Parade, Oadby displays greetings agreed by the group for a calendar of events and an annual social event is held.

Aims and Role of the Multicultural Group

  1. To promote education and greater understanding of the cultural diversity of the residents of Oadby and Wigston.
  2. To involve people from all backgrounds in Council activities and services in order to ensure that these meet the needs of the whole Borough and to promote the involvement of people from diverse cultural backgrounds in existing activities.
  3. To provide opportunities for residents of different backgrounds to work together on projects to provide for particular needs which may be recognised by the group.
  4. To assist in the training of council officers and members so that they are better equipped to recognise the needs of people from different cultural backgrounds and ensure that services are most appropriately delivered.
  5. To positively promote intercultural understanding and to organise multicultural, civic and social gatherings.
  6. To investigate any implications for the Borough to promote good community relations.
  7. To liaise with agencies and bodies representing different cultures and the County Council in aiming to promote good community relations in the borough.
