Running a Mobile Food Business

This page offers advice to anyone who operates or is thinking of starting up a mobile food business.

The first thing to do is to check out the area where you would like to trade.  Contact the highways department of the local council to find out if there are any restrictions.  if the land is privately owned, you should seek the permission of the landowner.

Registering your business

It is a legal requirement that you register your food business with the local council.  This should be the council where your vehicle is stored at night.  Registration is free and you can request a form by contacting us.|

If you keep your vehicle in the borough but do not trade in Oadby and Wigston, one of our environmental health officers will arrange to visit you and give advice.  Your vehicle and food preparation equipment are usually inspected and the training you have provided for food handlers will be checked.

As with all food businesses, your business will then be subject to regular routine inspection.

It is also likely that your vehicle will be inspected by environmental health officers in the area where you trade.

This is to ensure that you are handling and preparing the food in a safe manner.

Getting a licence for your business

In Oadby and Wigston, a Street Trading Policy |was introduced in 2009 and many businesses now need a licence from the Council in order to trade within the law.

This will affect you if you wish to site your mobile business on or near to a street in our borough.

Please do not trade from the street or highway in Oadby and Wigston until you have read the Street Trading Policy |and you have a licence, unless your business is exempt under our policy.

We advise you contact the Legal and Licensing Section |for advice before you apply for a street trading licence.
