Oadby and Wigston’s finest young sporting talent attended the Oadby and Wigston Youth Games Launch Evening on Tuesday 23 June 2009 at Parklands Leisure Centre, Oadby.
The Launch evening, which was sponsored by Parklands Leisure Centre Leisure Connection, was organised to congratulate all the athletes who have won their place to represent the borough in the Youth Games finals on Sunday 28 June at Loughborough University. The Mayor from Oadby and Wigston, Councillor Kevin Loydall, attended the event and provided a motivational speech to inspire the youngsters to do their best in the finals.
Over 170 competitors, coaches and volunteers from Oadby and Wigston will be representing the borough this year. Oadby and Wigston Borough Council would like to wish all competitors Good Luck for Sunday.
The Youth Games is an annual tournament, which this year is sponsored by East Midlands Airport. It involves all nine districts within Leicestershire and Rutland, competing against each other.
The aim of the day is to provide a fun and challenging opportunity for all the teams involved. Some of the sports included in the 2009 Games include: athletics, badminton, basketball, football, hockey, netball, rugby, swimming and table tennis. The age group varies from sport to sport but generally the games are targeted at young people aged 9 to15 years.
Former double Olympian, Avril Lennox MBE, the Oadby and Wigston Leisure Development Officer and Youth Games Team Manager said:
“It has been tremendous to see so many youngsters taking part in the local assessment and training sessions this year, in what is becoming one of the most prestigious Youth Sports events of the year, some of these participants could be our Olympians of the future”.
