LGBCE Electoral Review

What is an Electoral Review?

An electoral review is conducted by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE) on the:

  • Total number of councillors to be elected to the Council (council size);
  • Number and boundaries of wards (electoral areas) for the election of councillors;
  • Number of councillors for any given ward of the Council; and
  • Names of wards.

The key aim of a review is to ensure that the ratio of electors to councillors in each electoral ward is, as near as possible, the same. This is also balanced with the need to reflect local community identities and interests, and provide for effective and convenient local government.

The LGBCE is currently undertaking an electoral review for Oadby & Wigston Borough Council.

A Community Briefing to learn more about the review, and how to have your say, was delivered by the LGBCE on Thursday 31 October. The recording of the briefing can be played-back by following the link below.

Initial Public Consultation

The LGBCE has decided that 26 councillors are to be elected to the Council in the future.

The LGBCE is currently inviting proposals from the Council, interested parties and members of the public on a pattern of wards based on that number of councillors.

An initial public consultation inviting proposals will run from 22 October 2024 to 20 January 2025.

In drawing up a pattern of electoral wards, the LGBCE is seeking to:

  • Make sure that, within an authority, each councillor represents a similar number of electors;
  • Create boundaries that are appropriate, and reflect community ties and identities; and
  • Deliver reviews informed by local needs, views and circumstances.

The LGBCE will consider all views received during this phase of consultation, and plan to publish proposals for new electoral arrangements in June 2025.
