UK Parliamentary (General) Election - Thursday, 4 July 2024

An election of a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Harborough, Oadby and Wigston constituency will be held on Thursday, 4 July 2024 between 7:00 am and 10:00 pm.

The (Acting) Returning Officer and lead authority for the Harborough, Oadby and Wigston constituency is Oadby and Wigston Borough Council supported by Harborough District Council.

Eligibility to Vote

To be eligible to vote in this election, you must:

• Be registered to vote;
• Be 18 or over on the day of the election;
• Be a British, Irish or qualifying Commonwealth citizen; and
• Be resident at an address in the constituency; or
• Be living abroad and registered as an overseas voter.

Register to Vote

If you're not registered to vote (and it's now too late to do so) then you will not be able to vote at this election.

The deadline to register to vote for this election passed at 11:59 pm on Tuesday, 18 June 2024.

Voter ID

You must show an accepted form of photo ID to be able to vote at a polling station at this election.

You can use any of the following:

• Passport;
• Photocard driving licence (including provisional);
• Blue badge;
• Identity card with PASS mark (Proof of Age Standards Scheme);
• Biometric immigration document;
• Defence identity card;
• National identity card issued by an EEA state;
• Older person’s bus pass;
• Disabled person’s bus pass;
• Oyster 60+ card;
• Freedom pass; or
• Voter Authority Certificate (free voter ID)

The deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate for this election passed at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, 26 June 2024.

The name on your photo ID should be the same name you used to register to vote.

If it is not, you may be required to bring additional documents to the polling station (e.g. a marriage certificate, deed poll, utility bills etc.) to satisfactorily explain the name difference.

Poll Cards

Poll cards will be sent to all registered eligible voters from Friday, 7 June 2024.

If you don't receive a poll card, it could mean that you're not registered to vote (and it's now too late to do so) or you're not eligible to vote in this election.

You don't need your poll card to vote at a polling station, as long as you're registered to vote and bring an accepted form of photo ID.

A polling station is a designated place where you go to vote in person on election day.

Voting by Post

A postal vote is when you complete and return a postal vote pack sent to you before election day which contains your ballot paper and postal vote statement.

The deadline to apply for (or change and cancel) a postal vote for this election passed at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, 19 June 2024.

Postal vote packs will be sent to all registered eligible postal voters from Wednesday, 19 June 2024.

If you have not received your postal vote pack by Friday, 28 June 2024 please contact us.

The deadline to return completed postal vote packs is 10:00 pm on Thursday, 4 July 2024.

Postal vote packs should be returned by Royal Mail post as soon as possible.

You can also return your postal vote pack (plus postal vote packs for up to 5 other postal voters) by hand:

• To the Brocks Hill Council Offices on Washbrook Lane, Oadby (LE2 5JJ) during office hours; or
• To any polling station in Oadby, Wigston or South Wigston on election day.

You will be required to complete a Postal Vote Return Form if you return any postal vote pack(s) by hand. Follow the step-by-step instructions on how to complete the Postal Vote Return Form.

Postal vote packs must not:

• Be left in the Council Offices' external postbox or unattended reception point; or
• Be handled by political campaigners (subject to limited exceptions).

Postal vote packs will be rejected if they are not received and/or handled in the correct way.

Voting by Proxy

A proxy vote is when you appoint someone you trust to vote in person on your behalf at your polling station.

The deadline to apply for a proxy vote for this election passed at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, 26 June 2024.

Your proxy must be a registered eligible elector and bring an accepted form of photo ID for themselves (not for you) to the polling station.

Your proxy can act as a proxy for up to two people. If appointed to vote on behalf of constituency voters who live overseas, your proxy can act as a proxy for up to four people (but only two of those can live in the constituency).

Voting by Emergency Proxy

In certain circumstances, where you have an emergency that means you cannot vote in person, you can apply for an emergency proxy vote to appoint a proxy to attend your polling station to vote on your behalf.

These circumstances are limited to:

• You having a medical emergency (including disability);
• You are called away for work; or
• Your accepted form of photo ID is lost, stolen, destroyed or damaged.

This must be something that you weren’t aware of before and/or which arose after the deadline to apply for a normal proxy vote, which was 5:00 pm on Wednesday, 26 June 2024.

The deadline to apply for an emergency proxy vote for this election is 5:00 pm on Thursday, 4 July 2024.

Your application must include your date of birth, your own authentic signature and a supporting declaration and/or suitable evidence. It is also recommended that you include your and your proxy’s contact information should we need to contact you/them at short-notice.

Return your completed application form either by post or in person (if you apply on or imminently before election day itself) to the Brocks Hill Council Offices on Washbrook Lane, Oadby (LE2 5JJ) or by e-mail to absent.votes@oadby-wigston.gov.uk.
