VE and VJ Day community grants
To mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day and VJ Day we are opening a small grants fund to encourage the local community to get involved in the celebrations.
Residents and members of organisations such as clubs, charities and schools can apply for a grant of up to £100 to be used to commemorate the occasions.
A funding pot of £1,800, generously donated to the council by Broad Oak Group, is to be split across events in Oadby, Wigston and South Wigston.
VE Day is celebrated on 8 May and marks the end of the Second World War in Europe. This was ahead of the end of the war in Japan, VJ Day, which will be celebrated on 15 August.
What can the grant be spent on?
The grant can be spent on activities marking VE or VJ Day including street parties and tea parties and events for reflection and education.
The grant can be used to cover expenses including venue hire, decorations and entertainment. The grant can also be used to purchase refreshments for an event, but may not be used towards the purchase of alcohol.
Can the grant be used for a street party?
Yes, but it needs to be a significant, community event that is accessible for all residents in that area.
Please note that if you need to close a road you will need to apply on Leicestershire County Council’s website.
Who can apply?
Anyone who lives in the borough or represents an organisation in Oadby & Wigston can apply. The event must take place in the borough.
Applications must be for a community-based event, not a private function or an event run by a business.
How do I apply?
You can apply using the form below.
You will need to tell us how much money you would like to apply for, and how you plan to spend the money.
Applications close on Friday 4 April.
Due to limited funding we cannot guarantee that all applications will be approved. If you are successful, you will be contacted in the week commencing Monday 7 April.
Is there any other funding available?
National Lottery is available. You can learn more on their website.
